Sam Fender has handed over the full amount of his £25k Mercury Prize cash to the trust for venues, which functions to save the UK's independent concert spaces.

The star was presented with the prize on 16 October as his third album his work was named the best record of the last 12 months.

The musician has opted to donate the funds to the MVT, in acknowledgment of the vital role small stages had in his beginning days.

"I couldn't be pursuing what I am doing today if it wasn't for all the performances I did around the region, and beyond, when I was just getting going," said the artist. "These locations are legendary, but they are in difficulty."

Since the start of 2023, at least 150 of these spaces have permanently closed – roughly one-sixth of the total UK scene.

In the last year, top acts like Pulp, Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all supported the MVT in its initiatives to support the industry, by applying a small levy to their ticket costs, which benefits local stages.

Fender also joined in, generating over £100k on his 2024 arena tour to assist thirty-eight grassroots venues across England, Scotland, and Wales.

These funds helped spaces that were facing potential shutdown due to difficulties stemming from water damage, blazes and personal losses, as well as licensing issues, legal disputes and noise complaints.

Additional spaces obtained financial assistance in upgrading amenities and sound and lighting systems that positively impacted artists and concertgoers.

"The concept that revenue from shows in major spaces helps the local stages, where it kicks off for musicians like me, is just common sense," Fender has stated.

He is among several artists to contribute his award winnings to good deeds.

When they earned the prize in the year 1996 for their release their work, vocalist the singer announced that the act would donate their cash to the charity War Child.

That year, musician Ms Dynamite shared her prize between several charities, including the NSPCC and a charity for Sickle Cell.

"And I gave a grand to the center, to their gymnastics program, because I did gymnastics when I was younger and they lacked better apparatus," she explained to the media.

Previously, they donated their prize money to the local youth club that developed their group, in addition to other local music groups.

And 1994 winners M People contributed their winnings to a multiple sclerosis charity after a friend was found to have the condition.

"Winning was quite enough," remarked singer the singer. "The money was the extra but we could do without the extra, because we had the main prize. So our winning affected another person's life."

In the past week, the Music Venues Trust revealed it had saved several local spots in south-east England, by placing them under local control.

The first in Southampton and the other in that location were bought under the public acquisition scheme, which is backed by Arts Council England and supporters who buy "stakes" in the venues.
